WEEU 830 AM sports director Mitch Gerhart, one of Berks County’s most well-known and enduring radio personalities, has died.

Gerhart was 54-years-of-age, according to The Reading Eagle. WEEU sports director since 1984, he was pronounced dead by a staff doctor in Reading Hospital Saturday. after an apparent heart attack in his home.

Gerhart last worked Friday night, announcing a high school football playoff game with Paul Roberts that was broadcast live on the radio station.

In addition to running the sports desk and announcing games, Gerhart was part of the morning team at WEEU, Berks County’s only locally owned radio station. He also did production work for the station.

In a statement, the radio station said, “WEEU Broadcasting Company is deeply saddened by the loss of long-time veteran radio broadcaster, colleague, and friend Mitch Gerhart.”

“Mitch had a razor-sharp sense of humor, said Mike Faust, WEEU operations manager. “It came naturally to him. His commitment to local sports and this community was something he was very passionate about. We will miss him very much.”

WEEU President Dave Kline said: “Mitch Gerhart had a special, one-of-a-kind personality that enabled him to be both a legitimate sportscaster and a real jokester. When Mitch unleashed his quick wit and wry sense of humor, no one could keep up.

“We and the community, especially our family of WEEU listeners, will miss him very much. On the bright side, we were all very fortunate to have someone like Mitch reflect the efforts of so many scholastic sports participants as he provided a dignified and ultra professional outlet for their activities in our community. We are very proud of Mitch’s legacy in local broadcasting.”
